What a difference a year makes . . .

It's almost impossible for me to believe that exactly one year ago today, we found out we were expecting, just one day before my 39th birthday! We had just gotten home from a quick birthday trip to Franklin, and I was in bed, tired from the fun of the day. All of a sudden, this wave of nausea, unlike any I had ever experienced, washed over me. Oh. My. God. I knew in an instant that I was pregnant! We had tried unsuccessfully since Bailey was young to have another baby and it simply never happened. If you need proof that God has a sense of humor, here it is: I gave away all of my maternity clothes (after an 8 year hiatus in my closet) several months earlier; I had said in the fall that if we didn't get pregnant by my 39th birthday (which I KNEW we wouldn't), I wanted to have the endometrial ablation procedure because my periods are so horrific; and I had sold or given away just about every other baby item we owned (Chris held out and insisted we keep Bailey's bed and changing table - so glad he did!!). I should've known something was up because that winter, I was cold all the time. Those of you who know me know that I am RARELY cold and, in fact, I am very hot-natured, even in the winter.

So, the next day, January 25, 2010, Chris went to the drug store to buy pregnancy tests because I was simply too freaked out to do it, and we found out in short order that we were definitely expecting! Oh, what the past year has brought us. In some ways, it has flown by, but in so many other ways, it seems to have crawled by at a snail's pace. I was so shocked (a major understatement!) to be pregnant and that feeling of awe stayed with me right up until the day Morgan was born! Every milestone of my pregnancy was so special - Morgan began kicking at 20 weeks and did so consistently till she was born. Even now, she is quite a kicker, moving those strong little legs almost constantly! Since I had a 4 cm fibroid, my doctor recommended monthly ultrasounds, and we looked forward every month to seeing how our precious girl was growing and developing. Ah, yes, we were having a GIRL!! I was beyond thrilled!! To be so old and have a baby was to be challenging enough and I just didn't know what I'd do with a BOY!! I can still remember my later grandmother telling me stories while she bathed me when I was just a little thing about how glad she was that I was girl and how dirty and stinky boys were!! Those stories have stuck with me all these years!! So, God was giving us a girl, something we already had experience with, and I was thrilled!

After barely surviving the hottest summer on record, and I am not exaggerating, Miss Morgan was born by C-section on Thursday, September 16, 2010, weighing 8 lbs. 3 oz. and measuring 20.75 inches long. She is a precious baby, who laughs and smiles, coos and wiggles, and is happy most of the time. She sleeps well at night and is completely in love with her big sister.

And now, on the eve of my 40th birthday, exactly one year since we learned we were pregnant, I have so much to be thankful for and so much on which to reflect.

See you soon!!

That's why I don't carry a gun!

Typically, I'm a fairly mild-mannered person (not really, but let's go with it), but yesterday at the grocery store, Miss Morgan was crying and I was doing my best to get OUT OF THERE before she had a complete meltdown! I was standing in front of the coffee display, when an elderly woman stopped her cart, leaned over to look at Morgan, and said, "SOMEbody's not very happy." Really? Are you sure? I'm not following you. I almost lost it!! Usually, I try muster up something nice to say even when people are dumb, but all I could offer was a weak, tired smile. Some days, I just want to punch everyone I see! That's why I don't carry a gun . . .

First Foods!

I can't believe we actually waited a couple of days after getting the go-ahead from the doctor to give Morgan "solid' food. Today was the big day and Bailey had the honor of feeding Morgan applesauce for the very first time. We got out the super cool Beaba spoons, pretty feeding bib, and the Bumbo seat for the main event. After being appropriately prepped, Bailey gently fed Morgan a delicate bite. Morgan was obviously surprised by this new taste, but she was also curious. Bailey did a great job of catching the little bit of applesauce that Morgan sort of spit out, but she ate most of what we gave her. Amazing! We'll try applesauce for a few days then move on to rice cereal with fruit. Check back often for more of our feeding adventures!!

4-Month Check-Up

Morgan went for her 4-month check-up yesterday and it went wonderfully well!! She weighs 15 lbs. and is 25" long, an increase of 1 lb. and 1" from last month. She did all of her tricks for the doctor and he gave us the all-clear to add fruits, veggies, and rice cereal to her diet. Chris is THRILLED! He has been chomping at the bit to feed her solid foods for weeks, now! This picture is from Christmas Eve dinner when Chris let Morgan lick a piece of turkey! Sadly, Morgan has to have her immunizations, but she was such a champ! The nurse gave her the rotovirus vaccine orally, and Morgan looked up at her so sweetly as she squirted the liquid into her mouth. The shots hurt, of course, but after I picked her up and fed her a bit, she was smiling and cooing again. I am so thankful for a positive check-up!

Parenting is not for amateurs!

I can't believe it's been more than a week since I posted an update! Rest assured that there have been several blog posts rattling around in my head, however, they simply never made it to the actual blog! Currently, we are working on a morning nap routine with Miss Morgan and after two successful days, I thought we had it down pat. Wrong! We went to see a friend this morning and got home around 12:30 p.m. Morgan fell asleep on the way home so I just assumed she'd stay asleep once I brought her into the house. Well, you know what they say about when you assume . . . Well, she woke up immediately so after an hour of unsuccessfully trying to get her back to sleep (rocking, feeding, etc.), I gave up! Wouldn't you know it, after I got her up, I noticed she'd spit up all over her top (uncomfortable) and when I changed her clothes, she had the yuckiest diaper I've seen in a while (doubly uncomfortable)! I had to laugh because when I took off Morgan's clothes, she was so happy and smiling. I swear, parenting is not for amateurs! So, the next time she protests her nap, I will run down the check list to make sure Her Highness is as comfortable as possible!! (UPDATE: The dr. said yesterday that any caffeine I drink can affect Morgan's sleeping schedule. I can't believe I didn't think of that one on my own!!)

I don't like spit-up days!

Well, today is ANOTHER snow day here in the holler, and it's started out a bit wet - not because of the snow, but because Miss Morgan has spit up everything she's eaten this morning!! I am seriously running out of clean T-shirts and other important articles of clothing! She is such a sweet baby, though - after she spits up all over me, herself, and the carpet, she'll just smile & coo! It's hard to get mad at that sweet little person! Oh, well, time to go swab the decks again!!

Do not adjust your sets . . .

Isn't this amazing?! I love to squeeze Morgan's fat little legs which I call Michelin Man legs - she has fold upon fold and they are adorable. Apparently, they are quite functional, too, as you can see in this picture. Chris is holding her hands and she is standing on her own!! Isn't that wild?! She has been doing this for a week or so, and she can stand for several seconds with help. Chris is convinced she'll be walking soon, but I think she might be a little young, considering she's not even 4 months old yet!!

Rollin,' rollin,' rollin'

If you're like me, you want to chronicle every milestone in your babies' lives. Morgan has been trying to turn over for DAYS and she was making great strides the other day, so I kept my iPhone close so I could videotape the big moment. I have half a dozen one-minute clips of her rolling from her back to her side but she can never quite make it to her stomach. And then . . . I look away for a moment . . . and she does it!! My sweet baby rolled over! I am so proud of her, but also so sad that I didn't get it on tape. Then she did it AGAIN last night, while I was cleaning up after dinner!! Still no video. Hopefully, this weekend, we can get our sweet little girl rollin' on film!!

I finally got an upgrade!

This Christmas, I got a big surprise from my sweet hubby - an iPhone!! It is awesome and completely addictive. One of the best things about it is that I can now access a bunch of great pictures from my old phone now that they've been transferred to my new iPhone. My next few posts will be some of these pictures that I love so much! This first photo is from a few years ago. Bailey had wanted to try on wigs at a kiosk at the mall for a long time so one day, I gave in, and she looked so adorable in this bright pink one. I was almost tempted to buy it for her . . . almost!!

I finally got the question . . .

As you know, our daughters are 10 years apart. No, we didn't plan it that way. In fact, I never thought we'd have more children. It just never happened. With Bailey, I was pregnant the month after I stopped taking birth control, so I just assumed that when we decided to have more children, it would be a piece of cake. WRONG!! I don't even remember when I stopped taking birth control after Bailey was born, but the months came & went and I never got pregnant. I knew I didn't want to see a fertility specialist because I figured if it was God's plan for us to have more kids, we'd have more kids. Chris, of course, never lost hope. As the oldest of five boys, he loved the idea of a big family and was never fully sold on the idea of having an only child, even one as spectacular as Bailey :D So, anyway, the question I FINALLY got yesterday was why were my children's ages so far apart? Had a had more than one husband? If the circumstances had been different, I might have said, "Yes, I currently have 4 husbands and they all rock my world!!" But I didn't say that. I said what I usually say when I feel like I have to explain the age difference: "This is how God chose to bless us." And we truly are blessed . . .
